BNSv2 is Making BNS Great Again!
BNSv2 goes live this Thursday. Get a Make BNS Great Again hat to celebrate!
BNSv2 goes live on Thursday, September 19, 2024. It is the culmination of decentralized community effort to improve upon the name system contract launched with Stacks 1.0.
To celebrate the launch, we are selling limited edition Make BNS Great Again hats at bns.rocks. You can even get 21% off by signing up for updates from the BNS community at bns.dev.
What's new in BNSv2?
There are a number of exciting updates and bug fixes in BNSv2.
Multiple names per account
A single account will now be able to own multiple names. This reverts to the behavior of BNS prior to the Stacks 1.0 launch. This makes it easier to trade and hold names.
All names are SIP-09 NFTs
All top-level names are standard SIP-09 NFTs. This means that they will interoperate with compatible wallets and smart contracts with no additional development work required.
Managed namespaces are now possible
While existing namespaces such as .btc
and .id
are still 100% decentralized and permission-less, it is now possible to create new namespaces where a trusted contract or entity is able to manage registration of names in the namespace.
Zonefiles can be stored on-chain
Zonefiles can be stored either on-chain or on other storage networks such as IPFS. This will both offer increased reliability and flexibility for various use cases.
What happens to my name?
You will be airdropped your name to the account that owned it as of the migration snapshot on September 11, 2024. You don't need to do anything...your BNSv2 name should appear in your wallet sometime on September 19th.
What happens to BNSv1?
The BNSv1 smart contract will continue to exist. Any changes made to names via the BNSv1 contract won't be reflected in BNSv2 and vice versa going forward. It is our expectation that the community will quickly converge around supporting BNSv2.
Thanks to
A massive thank you goes out to Don, Gina and Rena from the Trust Machines team for picking up the ball for the community and bringing in Setzeus and Setpato to build the new BNSv2 smart contract. A big thank you goes out to all of the people from the community that attended our BNS Working Group meetings and contributed to the consensus that resulted in BNSv2.
